A Beretta Pico (Bottom) with a J-frame S&W (Top) |
Recently, a friend of mine bought a Beretta Pico and gave me the opportunity to shoot it enough to provide a quick overview. The Pico is an ultra-compact, polymer framed, double action only pistol chambered for the .380 ACP cartridge. Weighing a little less than 12 ounces, it competes with the likes of the Ruger LCP, the Remington RM380, S&W Bodyguard, Taurus 738 TCP, and Kahr CW380. According to Beretta, it is the thinnest .380 ACP on the market.
The Pico is an attractive, snag free design with an ambidextrous magazine release located at the rear of the trigger guard. It lacks an external safety and magazine disconnect. The slide locks on an empty magazine and two magazines are included: one with a standard base plate and another with an extension that provides a finger rest. One of its best features are sights that are easy to see with middle aged eyes!
A handful of ball ammo does not provide much information about reliability, but I had no failures and was pleased to see how accurate and controllable the Pico was, despite its light weight and narrow dimensions. Silver dollar sized groups were produced offhand at five yards and recoil was mild enough for fast, well placed followups. Beretta says that minimum barrel tilt makes the Pico soft recoiling and it kicked less than I anticipated.
Accurate, controllable, and unobtrusive in a pocket, the Beretta Pico leaves a favorable impression; however, it is not perfect. The magazine release is awkward and the polymer frame is slick, despite some stippling. The worst aspect of the Pico is the trigger. The heavy trigger pull is manageable but the shape of the trigger itself renders a disagreeable bite to large fingers during operation.
Like its competitors, the Beretta Pico is the result of compromises that produce a fairly powerful, easy to carry defensive pistol that is available at an attractive price. For me, it functioned well and its accuracy (which is certainly influenced by its good sights) and controllable nature more than make up for the magazine release. A little skateboard tape can provide a quick and economical fix for slickness.
